Key takeaways

  • Use it on clean, completely dry skin in good light.
  • Hold the head flat, don't press, and move in small circles against hair growth.
  • On the upper lip, press your tongue behind the lip to make the skin firm.
  • Brush the head clean after every use and never share it.

You've bought a face trimmer. It's sitting on your dressing table, looking small and slightly mysterious. Which way up does it go? Do you press? Which direction?

It's simpler than it looks. Here's exactly how to use a women's face trimmer, area by area, plus how to clean it and the mistakes that cause redness.

Before you start

  • Clean, dry skin. Wash your face, remove make-up and pat it completely dry. Face trimmers work best on dry skin.
  • Good light. Sit near a window or use a trimmer with a built-in light. Fine hair is almost invisible in dim light.
  • A charged trimmer. A weak battery makes the blades slow, and slow blades can tug.
  • A mirror at eye level, so you're not craning your neck.

The basic technique

  1. Choose the head: the round facial head for the upper lip, chin and cheeks, or the slim tip for the brows.
  2. Switch it on before it touches your skin.
  3. Hold the head flat against the skin, at a gentle angle, without pressing.
  4. Stretch the skin flat with your other hand.
  5. Move in small, slow circles or short strokes, against the direction the hair grows.
  6. Go over each area once or twice, then check in the mirror.
  7. Switch it off, brush the head clean and put the cap back on.

That's it. The trimmer does the work; your job is to keep it flat and move slowly.

Upper lip

The upper lip curves, so the skin needs to be flat. Press your tongue behind your upper lip, or gently pull the lip down with a finger. Start in the middle under the nose and work outwards to each corner, in small circles. Go slowly around the edge of the lip.

Chin and jawline

Tilt your head back slightly and stretch the skin with your free hand. Use small circles on the chin and longer strokes along the jawline. Stray dark hairs on the chin may need a second pass from a different direction.

Cheeks and sideburns

Peach fuzz on the cheeks is fine and pale, which is where a built-in light helps most. Puff out your cheek a little to make it firm, then glide in gentle circles. For sideburns, use short downward strokes and stop where you want the hairline to stay.

Eyebrows

Brows need the slim tip, not the round head.

  1. Brush your brows upwards with a spoolie so you can see the shape.
  2. Trim stray hairs below the brow and between the brows first.
  3. Follow the natural edge of the brow with short, light strokes, taking off a little at a time.
  4. Brush the brows back down and check both sides in the mirror before you trim more.

Never trim brow hairs from the top edge unless you're sure. It's easy to take off too much, and brows take weeks to grow back.

After you trim

  • Brush the head clean with the little brush. Hair caught in the head makes it less smooth next time.
  • Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser if your skin feels dry.
  • Skip strong actives like exfoliating acids on the same evening.

How often should you trim?

Whenever you notice regrowth, usually every few days to a week. Because trimming cuts hair at the surface and doesn't touch the root, it doesn't change how thick or dark your hair grows back, so trim as often as you like.

Mistakes that cause redness

  • Pressing hard. Pressure pushes the guard into the skin. Let it glide.
  • Going over the same spot again and again.
  • Trimming over pimples, cuts or sunburnt skin.
  • Using it on wet skin when it's made for dry skin.
  • Sharing it. Like a toothbrush, it's personal.
