Is upper lip hair normal for women?

By VIFERA Team · · Updated

The short answer

Yes. Almost every woman has some facial hair, from fine peach fuzz to a few darker hairs on the upper lip or chin. Genes, hormones and age all play a part.

Do I need to remove it?

No. Removing it is a personal choice, not a necessity. If you'd like to, choose a method that's kind to your skin. A face trimmer cuts the hair at the surface, so it's painless, and it won't make the hair grow back thicker.

When should I see a doctor?

Fine hair on the upper lip is normal. But see a doctor if:

  • you notice a sudden increase in thick, dark hair on your face, chest or tummy
  • your periods are irregular, or you also have acne or thinning scalp hair, as these can be signs of PCOS
  • the extra hair comes with a deeper voice or other sudden changes. The NHS says to get this checked urgently.

A doctor can find the cause and suggest treatments that reduce growth over time.

Tip: for the upper lip, stretch the skin gently with your other hand and glide in small strokes, in good light. It takes about a minute.
